Slippery surfaces and awkward movements can increase the risk of falls in the bathroom. Small adaptations can make everyday tasks safer and easier.
This page offers simple ways to make your bathroom a safer place. From flooring to grab rails, we’ll help you think through changes that can reduce risk and support your independence.
If you’re finding it hard to manage washing or bathing, consider the adaptations suggested on this website, but if further support is required, contact Milton Keynes adult social care for an occupational therapy assessment. You may be eligible for equipment, adaptations, or support.
If you are not able to safely get to the toilet in time at night, consider a male urine bottle or commode in the bedroom.
If you have frequency of urination which is disturbing your sleep, please contact your GP service about a continence review.
If you need a review of your continence products, consider contacting the continence service.
If you fall or need help, having a way to call for assistance is vital - especially in rooms like the bathroom, where accidents are more likely.
Keep a mobile phone nearby or think about using a personal alarm that can be worn around your wrist or neck. For advice on alarms and adaptations, your local social care service or home support team can help.

Staying Steady Milton Keynes offers specialist support to individuals, mainly aged over 65 years, who have fallen or are at risk of falling. We work with an individual and their carer to make decisions about the best way to reduce the risk of the person falling, raise awareness of risk factors for falling and make any necessary changes to their home to prevent falls.
The service is provided to any person (primarily those aged over 65 years of age) registered with a Milton Keynes Clinical Commissioning Group general practitioner (GP) who has fallen or is at risk of falling.
